There are two parts to the business, one which involves the booking of travel accommodations and the other involves a multi tier sale of the YTB home based business opportunity.
YTB Travel will provide those interested in working in the travel industry with their own travel booking website. YTB employs Independent Marketing Representatives (IMR) to sell these online travel agencies and recruit Referring Travel Agents (RTA).
What is the RTA program?
Most people end up becoming RTAs and they do not get the identification to sell travel but can process the booking through their purchased YTB Travel website and earn commissions. The YTB travel website costs around $400 upfront and an additional $49.95 monthly fee.
The reason that some people call this a YTB Scam is because they use many incentives to focus on recruiting more RTAs rather than selling travel. For example people can get rid of the monthly payment if they have recruited a certain amount of folks into their down line. However your down line needs to be maintained and if someone drops out your monthly payments return until the spot is filled again.
Further since YTB Travel is a publicly traded company their financial history is documented and available. In 2005 YTB Travel made the majority of its profit from the sale of these YTB websites and monthly payments and not the sale of actual travel products. The Better Business Bureau has also recognized that YTB has a significant emphasis on recruiting rather than selling travel.
The commissions that an RTA earns through their booking site range from 5-15% depending on what travel accommodations are purchased i.e. car rental or cruises. Since travel is a very competitive business and YTB Travel does not spend money on advertising you will have to do your own.
YTB Travel themselves state that travel is a seven trillion dollar industry. This level of competition means getting people outside your circle of friends and family to book through your site is extremely difficult. This combined with the individually low commissions is why most people end up reselling the opportunity instead of just the travel.
However many people sign up with YTB Travel to accommodate their own high level travel needs and for the discounts and bonuses that YTB Travel promises. These include car rental and hotel room upgrades among other various bonuses.
Overall there are a variety of ways to start your own travel business. YTB Travel does provide you with a booking website that operates in conjunction with Travelocity. However if you are not making your own deals often you will not be able to beat competitors travel prices.
BUT…What is Being Left Out of the YTB Presentations…
In my 6 years of being in the MLM industry, what has and continues to be left out of every presentation is the importance of understanding how you are going to MARKET YOU. When joining YTB you are not simply joining a company, you are becoming a business owner and that requires a completely different mindset!
